What is an Affiliate Program?

Affiliate Program, also called Affiliate Marketing, is an arrangement in which an online-merchant (business entity) pays an affiliate (agent) due commissions for every successful referral sales. It is a win-win relationship because the online-merchant will only have to create or provide the products and just leave the product promotion or marketing activities to the affiliate. The affiliate is able to promote the products by posting or sharing links (web address) that points to the online-merchant's online shop or website where people can buy the products.

How does the online-merchant know which affiliate to pay after a referral sale?

The online-merchant provide his affiliates their own Account Panel accessible in the online shop, where they are given their own unique affiliate-ID number. This affiliate-ID number will serve as a tracking code and is intended to be combined with the web address where the product is to be promoted online by the affiliate. The web address with an included affiliate-ID number is more conveniently called an "affiliate-link" . This affiliate-link is the whole web address that the affiliate will post or share online so that people can be forwarded to the online shop where the product can be purchased. How exactly an Affiliate Marketing work?

The phases on how an Affiliate Marketing work is illustrated below:


PHASE 1: 
Affiliate generates an affiliate-link

First, the Affiliate goes to the online-merchant's website to log-in to his affiliate account so he can create a weblink that he will promote or share to people. This weblink is more commonly called an "affiliate-link" which is basically a web address with an included tracking code (usually an affiliate-ID number). This web address point towards the sales page where people can purchase the product that is being promoted by the Affiliate. The tracking code included in the web address is basically a reference number that identifies the Affiliate from other Affiliates. This tracking code enables the website to associate a successful sale (a conversion) to the referring Affiliate. By associating the successful sale to the referring Affiliate, sales commissions can then be paid accordingly.

So if the Affiliate wants to promote the said sales page he will need to include a tracking code at the end of its web address so that this website will associate or distinguish the consequent successful sales to him . The tracking code will tell this website to take note of his affiliate-ID. For example if the Affiliate's affiliate-ID is x123y456z, the tracking code will be, ?tracking=x123y456z

PHASE 2: 
Affiliate promotes the affiliate-link

The Affiliate just copies the affiliate-link and pasting it on to any appropriate sites where people can see it. For example, he can post it on his Facebook page with some description as below:

PHASE 3: 
People clicks on the affiliate-link

There will be people who will be interested about the Affiliate's post so consequently they will click on the affiliate-link.

 

PHASE 4: 
People who clicked are forwarded to the sales page

The people who clicked on the affiliate-link will get forwarded to the sales page where they can make a purchase.

 

PHASE 5: 
People makes purchases

People will consequently make their purchases from the sales page.
